Time To Grow Up

Hello all, welcome to my first blog post!

I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Jenny, and I've just moved out on my own. For the first time in my life, I am having to cook, clean, and basically, learn to be an adult. Although I have a degree in Biology from a top-10 university, my lack of street-smarts is quickly becoming apparent. I've created this blog to share my triumphs and utter failures, as I attempt to enter the real world. In general, this will be the musings of a scientist who is struggling to enter the adult world.

Scientists are notorious for being brilliant about a given subject, but lacking any common sense. We may be able to operate fancy microscopes and manipulate the genetic information of cells, but I know of at least one 30-year-old who still wears velcro shoes, as shoes with laces are apparently "too much trouble". We may not all be that bad, but most of us still dress in the same clothes (usually jeans and a Tshirt) that we wore as a teenager, and pack PB&J sandwiches for lunch. And as for many scientists' social skills? Non-existent, beyond high-school politics and drama. Don't get me started on some of the horrendous pick-up lines I have heard. Many of us are simply overgrown, over-educated children.

I've decided to be different. I refuse to be one of those scientist who allows herself to remain in the same adolescent-phase, while we watch our friends (in other careers) mature. To this end, I have created a list of "adult characteristics" that I would like to achieve, and I try to post about one each day.

I would love feedback, so please leave a comment or suggestion. And thanks for visiting!
